Kat Komedy or The Attak of Bill
STORY
Two kitty kats kalled Dalton and Dorothy must stop a bad guy from doing bad things before more bad things happen.
CHARACTERS
DALTON: The hero who is sometimes in trouble.
DOROTHY: Dalton’s friend who is sometimes the hero.
BILL: A bad kitty kat.
NAOMI: Bill’s mom.
STAN: Bill’s friend.
STEVE: The baddest guy of all.
(DALTON and DOROTHY enter SR.)
DALTON: Hey! I’m Dalton, and I’m a (Presents a badge labeled “Sertified Bad Guy Katcher”) certified bad guy catcher!
DOROTHY: And I’m Dorothy! I’m also a (Presents a badge labeled “Sertified Bad Guy Katcher”) certified bad guy catcher!
DALTON: Hey, now! Wait a minute! You can’t be a bad guy catcher! You’re supposed to be the girl that gets taken by them!
DOROTHY: Not in this story. Sometimes, I do. Sometimes, I don’t.
DALTON: This doesn’t make any sense.
DOROTHY: Please, let me do it?
DALTON: Well, all right. You can be a bad guy catcher. Just try not to do it too much. That’s my job.
DOROTHY: And you can get taken by the bad guys yourself from time to time.
DALTON: Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Who said anything about me getting taken by bad guys?!
DOROTHY: You can’t have bad guy catchers without good guy takers, can you?
DALTON: I guess.
DOROTHY: Come on, Dalton. The whole boy-saves-girl thing is WAY too cliché. Let’s mix it up a bit.
DALTON: No! This is how it’s always been…since the beginning of time! When dinosaurs ruled the land! When the largest cat in the world, Kittyzilla, walked the Earth! When…
DOROTHY: Hold on. Kittyzilla never existed. You’re just making that up.
DALTON: I don’t care. Even if Kittyzilla did exist or is around, it’s still going to be the boy that saves the girl from the bad guys.
DOROTHY: All right. Stop your complaining. Let’s just carry on with our lives.
DALTON: Oh, Dorothy. A friend like you only comes around once in my entire nine lives.
(DALTON exits SR.)
DOROTHY: (To the AUDIENCE.) (Cups HER mouth.) (Whispering.) Pssst. I’m actually his girlfriend. (Winks.)
DALTON’S VOICE: Did you say something, Dorothy?
DOROTHY: No. I was just…singing quietly to myself.
(DOROTHY exits SR while BILL enters SL.)
BILL: (Rubbing HIS hands together.) Time to do some really bad things! Ha ha ha ha ha!
NAOMI’S VOICE: Oh, Bill! Can mommy ask you for a favor?
BILL: Just a second, mommy! I’m a little busy right now getting ready to do something mean.
(NAOMI enters SL.)
NAOMI: But this is important.
BILL: (Sighs.) What do you want?
NAOMI: (Holds up two of the exact same lipsticks.) I need your help deciding which of these would be better.
BILL: You got to be kidding.
NAOMI: What? You know I can’t make up my mind.
BILL: (Annoyed.) They’re both the same, mom. What difference does it make?
NAOMI: One is just a second newer than the other.
BILL: It’s not that much of a difference.
NAOMI: Just pick one already!
BILL: (Pointing to the left lipstick.) That one. It, uh, matches your face.
NAOMI: Awww, how sweet.
BILL: Yeah, yeah. Don’t mention it. Quit wasting my time.
(NAOMI exits SL.)
BILL: Now, where was I? (Thinking.) Ah, yes! (Rubbing HIS hands together.) Time to do something really, really bad! Ha ha ha ha ha!
(BILL exits SR with DOROTHY subsequently screaming. BILL then enters SR dragging DOROTHY while DALTON follows.)
DALTON: Let her go, you not-nice guy!
BILL: (Time-out gesture.) Time out. Not-nice guy? Is that the best you could come up with?
DALTON: You are a guy, and you’re not nice.
BILL: True, but you got to say my name as you’re springing into action.
DALTON: Ok. What is your name, then?
BILL: I’m glad you asked. It’s Bill.
DALTON: Listen, Bill. You…
BILL: Let’s try this again.
(BILL exits SR while dragging DOROTHY.)
DALTON: You can’t just…
DOROTHY: I’m taken by a bad guy, Dalton. Go with it.
DALTON: But, (Pointing SR.) you…and (Pointing SL.) him…and… (Scoffing.)
(DALTON exits SR.)
BILL’S VOICE: On three. One…two…three.
(DOROTHY screams while BILL drags her in SR with DALTON following.)
DALTON: Let her go, Bill! Or else…
BILL: Much better! With that out of the way, I shall do my part. Or else what?
DALTON: I am going to do something you’re not going to like!
BILL: Oh?
DALTON: (Pulls out a ball of yarn.) How about a nice game of catch?
BILL: (Clapping.) Oh boy!
DALTON: You want the ball?
BILL: Yes! Yes! Throw it!
DALTON: (Throws the ball of yarn SL.) Go get it!
BILL: (Chases the ball of yarn SL.) Oh boy! Oh boy! Oh boy!
DALTON: Oh, boy! A ball of yarn!
(DALTON runs off SL with DOROTHY stopping him.)
DOROTHY: Dalton!
DALTON: What?
DOROTHY: You just saved me.
DALTON: So?
DOROTHY: So, let’s get out of here!
DALTON: What about that ball of yarn?
DOROTHY: Would you just take me away already?! We’ll get another one!
DALTON: Works for me!
DOROTHY: (To the AUDIENCE.) He’s a bit of a nut. But I love him.
(DALTON exits SR while dragging DOROTHY. BILL enters SL with the ball of yarn.)
BILL: Again! Again!
(NAOMI enters SL.)
NAOMI: Wow, Bill! You were right! This lipstick does match my face!
BILL: Mommy! Can’t you see I’m in the middle of taking some good guys?!
NAOMI: What good guys?
BILL: Why, (Looks SR.) they’re right…where’d they go?!
NAOMI: Silly Billy! How do you expect to get ahead in life when you can’t take good guys?
BILL: First of all, mommy, don’t call me Silly Billy! I’m not a little kitten anymore! And second, they were just here a moment ago! The girl was all like, “AAAHHH!!!”, and the boy goes, “Let her go, you not-nice guy!”, and then (Holding up the ball of yarn.) this, and now…
NAOMI: You got to stop playing with balls of yarn. It does things to you.
BILL: (Annoyed.) Yeah. I know. I can’t help myself, ok? Cat instincts.
NAOMI: (Exiting SR.) Let me show you how it’s done.
BILL: This, I got to see.
(DALTON screams while NAOMI drags him in SR with DOROTHY following.)
DOROTHY: Let him go, you not-nice lady!
NAOMI: (Time-out gesture.) Time out. Not-nice lady? Is that the best you could come up with?
DOROTHY: You are a lady, and you’re not nice.
NAOMI: True, but you got to say my name as you’re springing into action.
DOROTHY: Ok. What is your name, then?
NAOMI: I’m glad you asked. It’s Naomi.
DOROTHY: Listen, Naomi. You…
NAOMI: Let’s try this again.
(NAOMI exits SR while dragging DALTON.)
DOROTHY: I don’t know why, but I have a feeling I’ve seen this before.
DALTON: Ahem!
DOROTHY: Oh, yeah! Didn’t this just happen a moment ago with me?
(DOROTHY exits SR.)
NAOMI’S VOICE: On three. One…two…three.
(DALTON screams while NAOMI drags him in SR with DOROTHY following.)
DOROTHY: Let him go, Naomi! Or else…
NAOMI: Much better! With that out of the way, I shall do my part. Or else what?
DOROTHY: I am going to do something you’re not going to like!
NAOMI: Oh?
DOROTHY: (Pulls out a ball of yarn.) How about a nice game of catch?
NAOMI: (Clapping.) Oh boy!
DOROTHY: You want the ball?
NAOMI: Yes! Yes! Throw it!
DOROTHY: (Throws the ball of yarn SL.) Go get it!
NAOMI: (Chases the ball of yarn SL.) Oh boy! Oh boy! Oh boy!
DOROTHY: Hey! Look at that! A ball of yarn! I saw it first!
(DOROTHY runs off SL.)
DALTON: Dorothy!
DOROTHY: (Stops in her tracks.) What?
DALTON: Aren’t you forgetting something?
DOROTHY: Yeah. The ball of yarn!
DALTON: No! Me!
DOROTHY: What about the ball of yarn?
DALTON: Forget about it! Just save me already!
DOROTHY: All right, fine.
(DOROTHY exits SR while dragging DALTON. NAOMI enters SL with the ball of yarn.)
NAOMI: Again! Again!
BILL: (Sarcastically.) Wow, mom. That was quite an example you set there.
NAOMI: (Slaps HER forehead.) I just did the same thing! Whose idea was it to make me half cat?
(STAN enters SR.)
STAN: Hey, buddy old pal!
BILL: Stan! You made it!
STAN: Did I miss anything?
BILL: My mommy and I were trying to take these good guys, but they were all like “AAAHHH!!!”, and then, “Let them go, you not-nice people!”, and then (Pointing out the ball of yarn.) that, and now…
STAN: You got to stop playing with balls of yarn. It does things to you.
NAOMI: (Annoyed.) We know! We can’t help ourselves, ok? Cat instincts.
STAN: (Exiting SR.) Let me take a whack at it.
BILL: Show us what you got, Stan old buddy.
(DALTON screams while STAN drags him in SR with DOROTHY following.)
DALTON: Hey! It’s my turn to be the hero!
DOROTHY: (Yanking DALTON away.) You’ve already had your chance! Girls don’t get to be heroes too often!
STAN: (Yanking DALTON away.) Shut it, you two! I’m just doing what I’m destined to do: taking good guys!
DALTON: (Pointing SR.) Hey, look! A ball of yarn!
STAN: (Looking SR.) Where?
(DALTON breaks free from STAN’S grip and replaces himself with DOROTHY.)
DOROTHY: What are you doing?
DALTON: Putting things back to normal.
DOROTHY: (Replacing HERSELF with DALTON.) Over my dead body!
DALTON: (Replacing HIMSELF with DOROTHY.) Come on. A girl rescuing a boy from a bad guy? Where’s the fun in that?
STAN: (Exiting SR while dragging DOROTHY.) Where is that ball of yarn?
DALTON: (Running SR.) Let her go, you other not-nice guy!
BILL: (Slaps HIS forehead and shakes HIS head in disbelief.) Even my own best friend can’t resist the power of the all-mighty yarn ball. Unbelievable!
NAOMI: He’s a cat, Billy, just like you and me (sort of). What did you expect?
DALTON’S VOICE: (Ball of yarn flies in from SR.) Go get it!
(STAN enters SR chasing the ball of yarn.)
STAN: Oh boy! Oh boy! Oh boy!
(STAN plays with the ball of yarn while DALTON and DOROTHY enter SR.)
DALTON: Say it.
DOROTHY: No!
DALTON: Come on, Dorothy. I saved your life again. You got to.
DOROTHY: That was not a rescue! That was just…hogging!
DALTON: (Holds up ball of yarn.) Don’t make me use this!
DOROTHY: (Sighs angrily.) (Sarcastically.) Oh, Dalton! You are so brave and heroic! Thank you for saving my life again!
DALTON: Pleasure’s all mine, sweetheart.
BILL: All right! No more Mr. Nice Guy!
DALTON: You weren’t Mr. Nice Guy to begin with.
BILL: Whatever. No more Mr….Nice-Nice Guy. However you say it. I’m going to get you, and this time, not fall for any more tricks, especially that great and powerful ball of yarn!
(BILL grabs DALTON and drags him off SL while DOROTHY follows.)
DOROTHY: Let him go, Mr. Not-Nice Guy!
BILL: It’s Bill!
DOROTHY’S VOICE: Want the ball? (Ball of yarn flies in from SL.) Go get it!
(BILL enters SL chasing the ball of yarn.)
BILL: Oh boy! Oh boy! Oh boy!
(BILL plays with the ball of yarn while DOROTHY and DALTON enter SL.)
DOROTHY: Who’s the hero now? Not you!
DALTON: No fair!
DOROTHY: Look who’s talking, Mr. I-Get-To-Be-The-Hero-Everytime!
NAOMI: Oh, boys?
BILL: Yes, mommy?
NAOMI: I need to tell you something. Something really important. (Sarcastically.) Oh, what was it? Oh yeah! (Angrily.) THIS ISN’T GETTING US ANYWHERE!!! NOW, STOP PLAYING WITH THOSE YARN BALLS AND TAKE THE GOOD GUYS THIS INSTANT!
BILL: Yes, mommy. (Hands DALTON the yarn ball.) Here, you can have this back.
DALTON: (Holds up the yarn ball.) You want it?
BILL: Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!
DALTON: (Mime throws the yarn ball SL.) Go get it!
BILL: (Runs off SL.) Oh boy! Oh boy! Oh boy!
NAOMI: (Walks off SL.) Darn it, Bill! When will you learn?!
(NAOMI enters SL while dragging BILL by the ear.)
BILL: Aw, come on, mom!
NAOMI: He didn’t actually throw it, you twit! Look!
(BILL draws his attention to DALTON, who hides the ball of yarn behind his back and starts whistling while staring off into space.)
BILL: If it’s not (Pointing SL.) there…then it must be…(draws his attention to STAN.)
NAOMI: I saw it first!
(BILL, NAOMI, and STAN fight over the yarn ball still in STAN’S grip.)
DALTON: Hurry, darling! Let’s make a run for it!
(DALTON runs SL while DOROTHY grabs his ear.)
DOROTHY: Not that way. (Turning DALTON SR.) This way.
(DOROTHY runs SR while DALTON follows.)
DALTON: My way was better!
(BILL, NAOMI, and STAN tire themselves out.)
NAOMI: Now look what you did, boys!
BILL: It’s not my fault, mommy. Stan wasn’t sharing!
STAN: I had it first!
NAOMI: (Confiscating the yarn ball.) Enough! (Throws the yarn ball SR.) We need a new plan to catch the good guys! So, start thinking!
(BILL, NAOMI, and STAN brainstorm.)
BILL: I know who can help us. The mighty Steve!
NAOMI: Absolutely not! He’s a bad guy above bad guys!
STAN: He’s the baddest guy of all!
BILL: But if anyone can take good guys, he can.
STAN: We can’t just…oh, what the heck! Desperate times call for desperate measures!
NAOMI: Guys, we really need to think this through.
BILL: What choice do we have, mom? We gave it our best shot, and we failed.
STAN: He has a point.
NAOMI: (Annoyed.) All right! But you better be sure about this, Bill!
BILL: I am…beyond 100%. Have I ever steered you wrong?
NAOMI: Yes you have…the last bajillion times!
BILL: But this time’s different. You’ll see. We’ll have the good guys in our paws faster than catching a ball of yarn.
(NAOMI scoffs and exits SL with BILL and STAN following. STEVE stands C looking into a crystal ball.)
STEVE: Good guys make me sick! One day, I, the all-mighty Steve, will rid the world of all do-gooders, and the good guys shall cease to exist! Ha ha ha ha ha!
(BILL, NAOMI, and STAN enter SL while STEVE continues laughing maniacally.)
STEVE: (Noticing BILL, NAOMI, and STAN.) Aaahhh!!! (Covers crystal ball.) What are you balls of yarn players doing here?! Don’t you know to knock before entering the mighty Steve’s cave?!
BILL: Pardon the intrusion, but we need your help.
STEVE: Oh, you do, do you?
BILL: You see, we’re after some good guys ourselves, and no matter how hard we try, we just can’t get them.
STEVE: Because you guys keep getting bamboozled by balls of yarn.
BILL: How’d you know?
STEVE: I am the mighty Steve. I know everything.
NAOMI: So, will you help us?
STEVE: Let me think about it while the three of you are busy.
STAN: Busy with what?
STEVE: (Tossing brooms to BILL, NAOMI, and STAN.) Training! (BILL, NAOMI, and STAN observe their brooms in a daze.) Well, what are you waiting for? Get to work!
(BILL, NAOMI, and STAN start sweeping the floor while STEVE gazes into the crystal ball once more. Some time later, BILL, NAOMI, and STAN tire themselves out.)
BILL: Is our training over yet?
STEVE: Let me have a look. (Walking around observing HIS surroundings.) Yep! Your training is complete.
NAOMI: (Holds up HER broom.) How’s any of this supposed to help us get the good guys?
STEVE: Oh, it’s not. I just wanted you to clean my cave because I didn’t feel like doing it.
STAN: (Furious.) WE’VE WORKED OUR ENTIRE BACKSIDES OFF FOR NOTHING?!
STEVE: Training, yes. But cleaning my cave, no.
STAN: (Lunging at STEVE.) (Furious.) YOU’RE DEAD, YOU GOOD-FOR-NOTHING…
(STEVE pokes STAN in the face, causing STAN to faint.)
STEVE: I wouldn’t do that if I were you. This is the mighty Steve you’re dealing with after all.
BILL: So, when can we go get the bad guys?
STEVE: Let me think about it.
(BILL and NAOMI pace back and forth while STEVE contemplates, A while later, STAN regains consciousness.)
NAOMI: Well?
STEVE: Now we can go get them.
BILL: Finally! It took you long enough.
STEVE: (Holds up HIS index finger.) But…my help comes with a price. If we get the good guys, I’ll be your partner for life. But if we don’t get the good guys…an eternity in my cave!!!
STAN: Don’t do it, Bill!
BILL: We’ll do it!
STEVE: Excellent! Now, let’s go get those good guys!
(BILL, NAOMI, STAN, and STEVE exit SL while DALTON and DOROTHY enter SR, playing with a ball of yarn together.)
DALTON: Now THIS is my idea of fun and togetherness.
DOROTHY: I agree. Oh, Dalton! A boyfriend, I mean, friend, like you only comes around once in my entire nine lives.
(DALTON and DOROTHY exit SL while continuing to play with the yarn ball together. BILL, NAOMI, STAN, and STEVE enter SR.)
BILL: Don’t worry, mom. It’s in the bag.
NAOMI: But to throw our own lives at the mercy of this…this…monster?!
STEVE: I heard that.
BILL: We got nothing to worry about. The good guys are as good as gone.
(BILL, NAOMI, STAN, and STEVE exit SL while DALTON and DOROTHY enter SR.)
DALTON: I’m tired. I think I’m going to go for a little cat nap.
DOROTHY: Me too.
(DALTON and DOROTHY sit and sleep while BILL, NAOMI, STAN, and STEVE enter SR.)
BILL: (Points out DALTON and DOROTHY.) A-ha! We got you now!
(DALTON and DOROTHY continue sleeping.)
STAN: (Shaking DALTON.) Wakey-wakey!
(DALTON and DOROTHY are still sound asleep.)
NAOMI: (Shaking DOROTHY.) Sleep time’s over! Fight time’s now!
(DALTON and DOROTHY continue to sleep.)
STEVE: Let me try. (Poking DALTON and DOROTHY.) Well, I’ve done all that I can. We’ll just have to wait it out.
(BILL, NAOMI, STAN, and STEVE observe DALTON and DOROTHY as they slumber, waking up some time later.)
DALTON: Ahhh!!! I needed that.
DOROTHY: So did I. A girl’s got to have her beauty sleep, you know.
BILL: (Grabs DALTON and DOROTHY.) Gotcha!
STEVE: (Points SL.) To the cave!
(BILL, NAOMI, STAN, and STEVE exit SL with BILL dragging DALTON and DOROTHY along, entering STEVE’S cave SL.)
BILL: Finally! I have you good guys after a bajillion years!
DALTON: Uuuhhh…I don’t think it’s been that long. Besides, I’m the only good “guy” you have.
DOROTHY: Yeah. I’m a girl.
BILL: Whatever! Things don’t have to make sense around here, you know.
STAN: Ditto.
STEVE: Let’s shut these two up right now. (Pokes DALTON and DOROTHY in the face, causing DALTON and DOROTHY to faint.)
BILL: What did I tell you, mom? Nothing to worry about.
NAOMI: You sure made mama proud.
STAN: Why didn’t we think of this sooner?
STEVE: Because you’re all stupid! But, that’s ok. From now on, I will help you all out with anything you need, just like I promised. Let’s party!
(BILL, NAOMI, STAN, and STEVE party in the cave with DALTON and DOROTHY waking up sometime later.)
DALTON: Ooohhh!!! A party!
BILL: I’ve never had this much fun in…(Noticing DALTON and DOROTHY awake.) (Gasps in horror.) Uh, guys? I think it’s time to call it a day.
NAOMI: Why? I’m having such a blast.
STAN: Come on, buddy. Just a little longer.
STEVE: Parties never end with the mighty Steve. Why would you…(Noticing DALTON and DOROTHY awake.) Oh. I see what’s going on here. All right, fools! Party’s over!
DALTON: (Pulls out a ball of yarn.) You guys want it?
STEVE: Yes! Yes!
DALTON: (Throws yarn ball SR.) Go get it!
STEVE: (Runs SR.) I saw it first!
BILL: (Runs SR.) No way! It’s mine!
NAOMI: (Runs SR.) I want it!
STAN: (Runs SR.) In your dreams!
DALTON: Dorothy?
DOROTHY: Yes, Dalton?
DALTON: I’m sorry I was such a jerk.
DOROTHY: That’s ok. I make mistakes, too.
DALTON: When I said it was the boy that always saves the girl, I didn’t really mean it. There’s something I want to tell you, but I’m afraid.
DOROTHY: What is it?
DALTON: I…I ll l…I lo…
DOROTHY: You…what?
DALTON: I love you! Ok? There, I said it! You are the most attractivest, beautifulest, and prettiest girl I’ve ever seen in my entire nine lives! I’m never going to find another girl like you, even if I looked for a bajillion years! Go ahead! Hit me! Be mad at me! Do whatever you want to me that makes you happy!
DOROTHY: (Pause.) (Places HER hand on DALTON’S shoulder.) Dalton?
DALTON: (Nervously.) Yes?
DOROTHY: [Optional. After DALTON says, “Yes?”.] I’m not going to hit you or be mad at you. Want to know why?
DALTON: Why?
DOROTHY: Because I love you too! You are the most attractivest and handsomest guy I’ve ever seen in my entire nine lives! I’m never going to find another guy like you, even if I looked for a bajillion years!
DALTON: Really?
DOROTHY: Yes. Instead of just friends, why don’t we be boyfriend and girlfriend?
DALTON: I like that idea!
DOROTHY: (Extends HER hand.) Let’s go home.
DALTON: (Grabs DOROTHY’S hand.) Lead the way…girlfriend!
DOROTHY: Gladly…boyfriend!
(DALTON and DOROTHY exit SR while BILL, NAOMI, STAN, and STEVE enter SR.)
DOROTHY: [Optional. After DALTON says, “Yes?”.] Come here. (Pulls DALTON towards HER and kisses HIM.)
DALTON: Wow. I feel like I’ve died and gone to yarn ball heaven.
DOROTHY: Me too. (Extends HER hand.) Let’s go home…boyfriend!
DALTON: (Grabs DOROTHY’S hand.) Lead the way…girlfriend!
(DALTON and DOROTHY exit SR while BILL, NAOMI, STAN, and STEVE enter SR.)
BILL: (Angry.) I can’t believe it! We fell for that stupid yarn ball trick again! (To STEVE.) Who died and made you cat president?!
STEVE: You dare talk badly to the mighty Steve? I’ll have you enslaved for this! (Prepares to poke BILL in the face, but BILL grabs his hand, causing STEVE to faint.)
BILL: That went better than expected.
NAOMI: All’s well that ends well. Mommy’s proud of you, Silly Billy. I mean, Bill.
BILL: You can call me Silly Billy now, if you want.
NAOMI: Aw, Bill. (Hugs BILL.)
STAN: (Hugs BILL and NAOMI.) Group hug!
BILL: Let’s all go home.
NAOMI: You said it!
STAN: Catch you all on the flip side!
(BILL, NAOMI, and STAN exit SR with BILL peaking in.)
BILL: (Holds out a ball of yarn.) I won’t be needing this anymore. (Tosses yarn ball to STEVE, who is still sleeping.)
(BILL leans out while STEVE wakes up sometime later.)
STEVE: (Dazed.) What happened? Hey! Where are the good guys?! Where are the bad guys?! Fine! Go ahead! Run and be merry, you not-nice people! I’m going to get you! Ha ha ha ha ha! (Sees yarn ball.) Oh boy! A ball of yarn!
(STEVE plays with the ball of yarn like a cat as the CURTAIN falls.)
End of Play
